first_imgMan Utd defender Tuanzebe: International break will help usby Ansser Sadiq18 days agoSend to a friendShare the loveManchester United defender Axel Tuanzebe believes the international break has come at the right time for his side. The youngster was in the team for their 1-0 loss away to Newcastle on Sunday in the Premier League. It is a result that puts United only two points above the relegation places. Now the players go away with their countries, before coming back for a huge league clash against Liverpool at home in two weeks.”Yeah, you can see we shut them out for a long period of time, Tuanzebe told MUTV after the game.”The only way they were able to score was a counter when we weren’t really there. The goal, it is what it is: a 20-yard shot, it wasn’t like they played through us or anything like that.”We go back to the drawing board, the international break [is] now time for us to regroup. We believe in what we’re doing, in time it will come.”Now it’s just that tough phase. Next game we look forward to is Liverpool. [We] definitely want to get a result in that game.” About the authorAnsser SadiqShare the loveHave your saylast_img read more

UNC Paid Duke Over $27K For Locker Room Damages, But AD Bubba Cunningham Clearly Isn’t Happy

first_imgNorth Carolina football spray painted 'UNC' in Duke locker room.Well, so much for UNC and Duke getting along. As a result of the damages the North Carolina football team caused to Duke’s locker room and facilities after this past November’s football game, the Blue Devils sent the Tar Heels a $27,140 bill. Head coach Larry Fedora and school AD Bubba Cunningham each wrote personal checks for $13,585 to split the cost, according to The Herald-Sun. But it doesn’t appear that UNC’s brass are necessarily happy about it. Cunningham, in a letter to Duke AD Kevin White, claimed that he didn’t understand the charges. He also made note of the fact that someone painted D-U-K-E on some of UNC’s pillars last year.“While I may not understand the charges assessed, we take complete responsibility for our students and our programs.” Laura Keeley, Duke beat reporter for the Raleigh News & Observer, also mentions that Cunningham was disappointed that Blue Devils coach David Cutcliffe didn’t return Larry Fedora’s “apology call.”Bubba Cunningham also said he was disappointed Duke coach David Cutcliffe never returned Larry Fedora’s apology call— Laura Keeley (@laurakeeley) February 13, 2015Keeley also tweeted out a number of photos of the damages. Photo of said damaged locker room carpet in the Duke visitor’s locker room, which was replaced for $22,028.44 pic.twitter.com/qdcwqUP0LL— Laura Keeley (@laurakeeley) February 13, 2015Spray paint on Duke practice facility walls pic.twitter.com/XL3rzXVuCe— Laura Keeley (@laurakeeley) February 13, 2015More spray paint damage in Duke vistor’s locker room pic.twitter.com/ts55QzDWx6— Laura Keeley (@laurakeeley) February 13, 2015More spray paint damage in the Duke visitor’s locker room — repainting that & Wallace Wade billed at $4,470 pic.twitter.com/acJ3n1c7h2— Laura Keeley (@laurakeeley) February 13, 2015And, finally, the picture of Wallace Wade spray paint damage pic.twitter.com/fQdHYMip7H— Laura Keeley (@laurakeeley) February 13, 2015Duke and North Carolina renew their rivalry this November 7th in Chapel Hill.[CBS Sports]last_img read more

Title race over? Rafa toast of Liverpool as City suffer shock defeat

first_imgPep Guardiola has said a few times that if his Manchester City side dropped points the Premier League title race would be “almost over”.And, while the amount of games left may offer the Blues some hope that they can still overhaul Liverpool, optimism will not be the overriding emotion after a damaging defeat at a Newcastle side managed by former Reds boss Rafa Benitez. It will feel as if the roof has fallen in on a campaign that promised so much. A wobble over Christmas saw City’s slender lead over Liverpool turn into a seven-point deficit, and with the Reds set to play Leicester on Wednesday it could now be restored to seven – effectively eradicating City’s victory when the two sides met early in January. Article continues below Editors’ Picks ‘There is no creativity’ – Can Solskjaer get Man Utd scoring freely again? ‘Everyone legged it on to the pitch!’ – How Foden went from Man City superfan to future superstar Emery out of jail – for now – as brilliant Pepe papers over Arsenal’s cracks What is Manchester United’s ownership situation and how would Kevin Glazer’s sale of shares affect the club? City have a couple of issues to address after their fourth defeat of the season but they can do nothing about their biggest problem: the fact that Liverpool just keep winning. This was an opportunity to cut the Reds’ lead to just one point, an opportunity to pile even more pressure on a team that has got their fans dreaming once again. And when City scored after 26 seconds it looked to all the world as if the juggernaut would just keep rolling on. City’s defeats over Christmas owed much to injuries in key areas and since then they had picked themselves up in impressive style, scoring 33 goals and conceding just two in their eight games leading up to the clash at St James’ Park – a final as Guardiola billed it on Monday.Yet they could not capitalise on that early advantage, their moves breaking down thanks to sloppy passes or loose touches. Newcastle did not offer an awful lot going forward but their situation forced a bit of urgency and they made life hard for City by getting in their faces and reducing spaces. They were still in the game at the hour mark and when City failed to clear their lines it was no surprise that Salomon Rondon made them pay.Salomon Rondon, NewcastleThat need not have been the end of the world for City, who threw on Gabriel Jesus for the expected onslaught, but on another Newcastle foray forward the hosts caught out Fernandinho, who feinted past one man inside his own box but did not expect the other, losing the ball and compounding his mistake by conceding a foul and a penalty.Matt Ritchie slammed it home, and even with plenty of time left, it was game over.Is it title race over, too?It is surely too early to say that, but so far Liverpool have given no indication that they are going to slip up. They are winning the tight games and the open games, and the rest they seem to win comfortably.Guardiola did not want to get too much into the idea that this game was an opportunity to crank up the pressure on the Reds but he did admit that City would basically need to win all of their games if they are to win the title. He does not expect Liverpool to slip up. Jurgen Klopp does not expect City to slip up either, and in fact he even said he expected them to beat Newcastle. As for Klopp, he has not got much wrong in the last few months and even when he does err it goes Liverpool’s way. That’s just the way this season is panning out. Sturridge banned for six weeks

first_imgFormer Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge has been banned from football for six weeks – four of which are suspended – and fined £75,000 for breaching FA betting rules. In November 2018, the England international faced eleven misconduct charges, with nine of them concerning alleged breaches of the FA’s “inside information rule”.Sturridge was accused of providing information to family and friends relating to possible transfer moves in January 2018, with the details allegedly used for betting purposes. Editors’ Picks Emery out of jail – for now – as brilliant Pepe papers over Arsenal’s cracks What is Manchester United’s ownership situation and how would Kevin Glazer’s sale of shares affect the club? Ox-rated! Dream night in Genk for Liverpool ace after injury nightmare Messi a man for all Champions League seasons – but will this really be Barcelona’s? An independent Regulatory Commission dismissed those charges but found Sturridge guilty of two others, in which it was alleged the player told his brother to bet on a potential move away from Liverpool to Spanish side Sevilla.A move to LaLiga never materialised and he joined West Brom instead, but the commission found Sturridge was in breach of FA rules because he passed the information on for betting purposes.Sturridge’s punishment is a six-week suspension from domestic football matches starting July 17, with four weeks of the ban suspended until the end of August 2020.Therefore, the striker – who is a free agent following his release by Liverpool – will be free to resume footballing activities by July 31 if he does not commit any further breaches. He has also been fined £75,000, though the FA seemingly feel the punishment is insufficient, confirming they will appeal against the ruling that dropped nine of the 11 charges made against him and the sanction that has been subsequently imposed.A statement released by the FA read: “Mr Sturridge faced 11 charges. Nine of those charges (1a, 1b, 2, 5, 6a, 6b and 7-9) concerned alleged breaches of the inside information rule, in that, it was said, Mr Sturridge had provided inside information to friends and family about his possible transfer moves in January 2018, which information had then been used for, or in relation to, betting. Those charges were dismissed by the regulatory commission.“The regulatory commission found proved charges 3 and 4, which alleged that, in that same transfer window, Mr Sturridge had instructed his brother, Leon, to bet on a possible move by him (Daniel) to Sevilla FC. In issuing that instruction, the regulatory commission found that, as a matter of fact, Mr Sturridge had provided his brother with inside information for that purpose.“By way of sanction, the regulatory commission imposed on Mr Sturridge a six-week suspension from participation in any domestic football matches (including friendlies), such suspension being effective from 17 July 2019. Four weeks of that ban have been suspended until 31 August 2019, meaning that Mr Sturridge will be able to resume participating by 31 July 2019 in the event he commits no further breaches of FA Rule E8. In addition, the regulatory commission imposed a fine of £75,000 on Mr Sturridge.“The FA respectfully disagrees with the regulatory commission’s findings and will be appealing against the charges which were dismissed and the sanction which was imposed.”Sturridge was also in the news recently after his dog was stolen – and subsequently found – from his home in Los Angeles.last_img read more

Before the season begins, college football analysts predict the winners of each conference, the College Football Playoff, and college football’s top award – the Heisman. On Friday morning, ESPN released its new predictions for the Heisman Trophy. Despite the run of quarterbacks lately (six of the last seven), ESPN is going with a running back to top the list.Last year’s runner-up sits at No. 1. It’s Stanford running back Bryce Love who exploded for over 2,000 yards after taking over for Christian McCaffrey. Here’s the top five.Bryce Love, RB, StanfordJonathan Taylor, RB, WisconsinEd Oliver, DT, HoustonWill Grier, QB, WVUKhalil Tate, QB, ArizonaEd Oliver is an interesting choice for the Heisman. Although he’s been a dominant force since his freshman season. Oliver is a candidate for the No. 1 overall pick in the upcoming NFL draft, but that doesn’t make his case for the Heisman any easier.Ndamukong Suh is the last defensive lineman to sit in the top five of Heisman voting – a feat he accomplished in 2009. ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit Was “Shocked” By This On Saturday

first_imgKirk Herbstreit talking on ESPN.James Franklin’s decision to run the ball with his tailback on a 4th and 5 at the end of Penn State’s game against Ohio State drew criticism from many. The Nittany Lions’ head coach admitted after the game that he made a mistake with the play call and that he should’ve called something else.ESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit reacted to the play call in real time, as he was calling the game for ABC.The analyst was “shocked.”“I’m completely shocked by that last call,” Herbstreit said on ABC. “Completely shocked. Your quarterback has a career night. His ability to run and throw, they’re in man to man, he’s been taking off and improvising all night whether he runs for the first down or buys time to get a receiver to separate … but instead, the handoff to Sanders.”It was certainly a puzzling call. The loss was Penn State’s first of the season, while Ohio State remained unbeaten. The Buckeyes move forward as the Big Ten’s College Football Playoff frontrunner.last_img read more

College Football Coach Gets Vote Of Confidence From AD After Brutal Start

first_imgTulsa football team runs onto the field.TULSA, OK – DECEMBER 01: The Tulsa Golden Hurricane take the field before the C-USA championship game against the Central Florida Knights on December 1, 2012 at H.A. Chapman Stadium in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Tulsa defeated Central Florida 33-27 in overtime. (Photo by Brett Deering/Getty Images)Philip Montgomery took over as head coach of Tulsa football ahead of the 2015 season, after years under Art Briles at Baylor. Expectations were pretty high at the AAC program, as he brought over the explosive spread offense from the Bears. The early results were incredibly strong.Tulsa went to a bowl in year one under Montgomery, and jumped up to 10 wins in year two, winning the Miami Beach Bowl and going 6-2 in a tough AAC.In the two years since, however, the Golden Hurricane have won just three total games, and it has left many wondering if Philip Montgomery’s job could be in trouble.Athletic director Derrick Gragg knows that the team has struggled, and spoke about his head coach on Wednesday.Depending on your viewpoint, that could either be reassuring for Montgomery… or the deadly “vote of confidence” that so often comes before a firing. From the Tulsa World:“First of all, I’ll just state that I’m fully supportive of coach Montgomery,” Gragg told the Tulsa World on Wednesday. “I think everybody realizes that (the American Athletic Conference) is a higher level of competition.“(Athletic directors) always say that they evaluate at the end of the year, but I think you evaluate as you go along and then you do a full evaluation at the end of the year. Right now, the evaluation is that we still have five games left. We can still become bowl eligible, and that’s where our focus is.”As columnist Bill Haisten notes, firing Montgomery would involve incurring a $4 million buyout, a big expense for a Group of Five program. Montgomery was also Gragg’s hire to fix the football program, which may give him more rope. Gragg inherited the last Tulsa coach, Bill Blankenship, who had an eerily similar trajectory with the Golden Hurricane before being let go.Tulsa picked up its sole win of the year in the season opener against FCS program Central Arkansas. The following week, they lost by a touchdown to Texas, and earlier this month, had undefeated USF dead to rights before falling in the game’s final moments, 25-24. The Golden Hurricane may not be as bad as the 1-6 record, but Montgomery definitely needs to get things turned around a bit here in the back-end of the season to feel comfortable.[Tulsa World]last_img read more

Tate Martell Might’ve Hinted At Dwayne Haskins’ NFL Draft Decision

(Photo by Joe Robbins/Getty Images)Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins has yet to publicly announce his decision for the 2019 NFL Draft. The Buckeyes’ redshirt sophomore quarterback is expected to leave school for the NFL, as he’s a probable first-round pick, but he won’t be making any official decision until after Ohio State’s Rose Bowl game.Tate Martell appears to be planning on Haskins to leave, though. The Ohio State freshman quarterback posted the following message on Instagram to sophomore running back J.K. Dobbins, who should get the majority of the carries next season with Mike Weber leaving for the NFL.Martell appears to be ready to share the starting backfield with Dobbins.Of course, Haskins might not have made a decision yet, but you can’t blame Martell for planning on (and being excited about) taking over the starting quarterback job.Ohio State and Washington are set to play in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1. We’ll know more after that.last_img read more
