Binghamton restaurants ‘setting the table’ for phase three

first_imgBINGHAMTON (WBNG) — While the Southern Tier is still awaiting word on when restaurants and bars will be allowed to welcome customers inside as part of phase three, local eateries aren’t wasting any time getting ready. Sharak says with the state yet to release official guidance for restaurants, they aren’t exactly sure what they are preparing for. “50 percent is better than nothing and hopefully if the numbers get better or stay where they are then we’ll get back to normal,” Sharak says. “We want to clean everything up because the building has been closed for three months and get our food prep together for opening,” says co-owner Marie Sharak. At Sharkey’s, Marie Sharak says for now they are just excited to get back to business. At Sharkey’s while they too haven’t received official word, they are preparing for a fifty percent limit. “We have a lot of regulars and they’re like family so that’s what we’re looking forward to.” “We regularly get asked different questions from different businesses in different phases, they want to know what they can do, what they can’t do and we’re here to help,” he said. center_img Jason Garnar says he hopes the state could release that guidance as soon as tonight. For now Jordan Rindgen, owner of the Colonial on Court Street in Binghamton says he is playing the same waiting game. Binghamton mayor Rich David says much like the city was able to help restaurants expand outdoor seating by streamlining the permit process as part of phase two, he expects the city to act as an resource for local businesses during phase three. “It’s crazy but it is what it is there’s nothing we can do we just have to wait until we get the word and that’s it,” she says. Broome County Executive Jason Garnar says the county is on track to enter phase three this weekend, but he has yet to receive official word from the state. At Sharkey’s Bar and Grill on Glenwood Ave in Binghamton staff spent Monday getting the restaurant ready to open their doors once again. “I’m really not too concerned with what the regulations are going to be, because we’ll be able to adapt to them, we’re hoping that we’re not at 20 percent all summer but if it is we’ll have to adapt,” he says. last_img read more

Countdown to Camp: Syracuse has 2 wide receiver spots up for grabs

first_imgSyracuse football’s training camp begins July 30. Every day leading up to camp, The Daily Orange’s football beat writers will take a look at some of the upcoming season’s most pressing storylines, players and position battles. Read more on the Countdown to Camp here. The passing game drove Syracuse’s strong offensive output last year. In part, it was the strong play of quarterback Eric Dungey, but he missed several games down the stretch. Still, the offense played well. That was especially the case in the season finale against Pittsburgh, when the Orange put up 61 points. The strong core of wide receivers kept Syracuse motoring, led by record-setting Amba Etta-Tawo. Now, Etta-Tawo and the dynamic Brisly Estime are gone. Last year, SU deployed four wide receiver sets. Etta-Tawo and Steve Ishmael usually lined up on the outside, Ervin Philips and Estime on the inside. In his senior season, Ishmael will take over as the primary outside receiver, and Philips was already the No. 1 on the inside. The Orange has to find a second outside and inside receiver to fill the holes. There are two receivers competing for both jobs, and training camp will provide all four a chance to show why they are most deserving.AdvertisementThis is placeholder textJacob Greenfeld | Staff PhotographerThe first depth chart lists Jamal Custis and Devin Butler as the two players competing on the outside. They have rather different skill sets. At 6-foot-5, Custis is the tallest wide receiver on the roster. He would bring an unparalleled size factor, if he stays on the field. He missed all of last season with an undisclosed injury and caught only five balls in 19 games over two seasons before that.Butler is a speedy wide receiver who could make him an immediate deep threat. But inexperience remains a worry here, too. Butler missed the last six games of the year due to a foot injury, according to multiple reports, and while he was medically OK by spring practices, he has not taken on a major role for SU.The inside receiver battle, per the depth chart, is between Sean Riley and Sean Avant. Riley should have the upper hand here. He caught more balls last year (11) than Avant has in his three years at SU (seven). At 5-foot-8, 155-pounds, Riley is small, even by inside receiver standards. He also figures to take over as the primary return man, which might impact his availability as an inside receiver. Syracuse.com’s Stephen Bailey has reported that incoming freshman Nykeim Johnson has impressed early. He will be somebody to keep an eye on for the inside spot opposite Philips. Photo by Terrence Bishop.Elisa & Jeff Willis, Orange Married May 24, 2013 We were both Angels fans when we met and knew it was important to us both. We wanted a wedding that would be memorable for our family and friends. We had our engagement pictures on the field at Angel stadium, I had my bachelorette party Sunday at the day game before the big day, and our wedding reception was in the Diamond club. It began with our save the date shaped like a baseball ticket with the seat number and Angels theme. Mike Scioscia even signed one for us. At my bachelorette party we sang “Take Me Out To The Ballgame” on the field at the seventh inning stretch. Our wedding was filled with an Angels baseball theme. From popcorn and pretzels for the appetizers, Angels baseball garter to cracker jacks and baseball chocolates for our party favors. The groomsmen had Angels baseball ties, the groom had baseball cuff links, and the tables had baseball numbers. Our wedding party pictures were in the dugout and our final photo was at dusk with the stadium behind us. As we near our 5 year anniversary this May it is the wedding that all our family and friends still have amazing memories from. Photos by Terrence Bishop.
