Exclusive – Rush: Liverpool AND England will benefit from Sterling’s rest

first_imgIan Rush insists Raheem Sterling DOES want to play for England – and believes sensible management will see the youngster deliver his best for both club and country. The Liverpool forward was left out of the Three Lions’ starting XI for the 1-0 Euro 2016 victory against Estonia on Sunday afternoon, after complaining he was tired.Roy Hodgson has announced he will speak to Anfield boss Brendan Rodgers about how to manage the 19-year-old’s development, and former Reds favourite Rush claims communication will be the key going forward.“Raheem Sterling played in the World Cup last summer which is not just physically, but mentally tiring,” he told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show. “England can’t just rely on Sterling. He’s maturing and his body is still filling out. I want to see Sterling playing for the next 15 years, not [the next] five.“Sterling wants to play for England. When I speak to him he’s very passionate about that.“He’s just been honest though and said, ‘I am tried’. I’m sure Brendan and Roy will have a word and say, ‘come on, let’s do what’s best for the lad’.“That will see him produce his best goods for Liverpool and England.”last_img read more
