Rhinos in Boucher’s safe hands

first_imgHaving retired from his active cricket career in mid-2012, Boucher asserted that he will now focus all of his energy to saving South Africa’s rhinos.(Image: Mark Boucher) Micro-chipping the rhinos and collecting the DNA for a database will go a long way towards saving the animals from decimation.(Image: SAB) MEDIA CONTACTS • Mark Boucher   SAB-Boucher NPC  +27 11 881 84 17  RELATED ARTICLES • Using technology to fight poaching • A legacy for the African rhino • Giving rhinos a voice through art • Sangomas join the rhino force • Taking the plunge for our rhinos • Special anti-poaching weapon for SA • Musos pitch in to save rhinosCadine PillayFollowing a severe eye injury which forced his early retirement, former Proteas wicketkeeper Mark Boucher has gloved up for rhinos – the cricket star has decided to devote his time to rhino activism as South Africa battles with escalating poaching figures.Boucher and South African Breweries (SAB) launched the non-profit SAB-Boucher Conservation in October this year. Boucher was appointed by SAB as its Castle Lager rhino ambassador, to raise funds for rhino conservation both locally and abroad through the Our Rhinos in Safe Hands campaign.Having retired from his active cricket career in mid-2012, Boucher asserted that he will now focus all of his energy on the new partnership. The former Protea played 147 test matches and 295 one day internationals for South Africa, taking 999 dismissals behind the stumps and one wicket as bowler, in all forms of the game – his 556 test dismissals is still a world record. “I now have the opportunity to contribute something meaningful towards a cause that is close to the hearts of my fellow South Africans.” Boucher said at the launch.“This type of partnership can make a positive contribution if we focus on a tangible contribution to the larger rhino conservation effort.”The SAB-Boucher partnership aims to raise enough money to register all of South Africa’s 18 000 rhinos on a national rhino DNA database.SAB was involved in the setup of the organisation with a donation of R300 000 (US$34 000) but the ultimate goal is to raise at least R1-million ($113 000).Micro-chipping and DNARhoDIS (the Rhino DNA Index System) was established and is run by Veterinary Genetics Laboratory at the University of Pretoria.A DNA database is an essential element in the fight against poaching. If the origin of the horn is unknown, it makes tracking the illegal trade very difficult. If trade is legalised, as many argue is the only sustainable solution to the poaching problem, then the DNA database will be central to managing it.“Micro-chipping the rhinos and collecting the DNA for a database will go a long way towards saving the animals from decimation,” Boucher said.“There are so many passionate people out there fighting rhino poaching every day, and yet we don’t seem to be winning the battle.”When a police raid results in the arrest of poachers, those in possession of rhino horns, or the actual traffickers, the DNA database will go a long way towards giving authorities more ammunition against criminals. It will prove that horns seized from suspects can be traced to a particular country and conservancy, and will help to establish when the animal was killed; this makes a much stronger case in the courts.“Our passion for the country’s natural environment motivated us to join forces with Mark Boucher to single-mindedly focus on the DNA database as one of the key pillars required for a sustainable solution to rhino poaching,” said SAB executive director Dr Vincent Maphai.SAB has micro-chipped and collected DNA samples for the database since 2004 and 77 rhinos have received microchip insertions and had DNA samples extracted to deter poachers.Other players get on boardSupporters of SAB-Boucher Conservation include Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, former cricket administrator Dr Ali Bacher, former SANParks CEO Mavuso Msimang, renowned conservationist Dr Ian Player, and scientific officer of the African Rhino Specialist Group Dr Richard Emslie.Poaching figures for 2012 have already surpassed all past records, with 570 rhinos killed this year alone in South Africa.SAB-Boucher Conservation will initially focus on its most pressing concern, namely the safety of South Africa’s rhino, but is later expected to direct its efforts to other threatened species, whose DNA will also be entered into the database.last_img read more

WordPress Just Made Millions of Blogs Real-Time With RSSCloud

first_imgTags:#Features#news#NYT#RSS & Feeds#RSS Readers#web All blogs on the platform and any blogs that opt-in (using this plug-in) will now make instant updates available to any RSS readers subscribed to a new feature called RSSCloud. There is currently only one RSS aggregator that supports RSSCloud, Dave Winer’s brand-new reader River2. That will probably change very soon. Update: Within hours another RSS reader called LazyFeed has announced that it will support RSSCloud as well.RSSCloud is an element that’s always been present in the RSS 2.0 spec but has drawn new attention with the rise of interest in the Real-Time Web. The element was just added to the WordPress code this afternoon. The implications of this big vote of support go beyond reading WordPress blogs; this is the kind of traction that new technologies can leverage to gain support in many different applications.Supporting feed readers will now be able to request updates from WordPress blog feeds as soon as they become available, instead of polling a server periodically to check for updates. (Your blog posts typically get picked up by RSS aggregators 15 to 60 minutes after you posted them – this will change that.) The feature is already being rolled out, several WordPress users report seeing the cloud element in the source code of their RSS feeds. Update: Here’s the official announcement from WordPress HQ.This is like the difference between checking your email every once in awhile and using a Blackberry to get new emails pushed to you as soon as they arrive. The subscription method of RSSCloud works more like Instant Messaging than the old method of polling feeds for updates each time you fire up your feed reader.Google Reader, the dominant RSS aggregator on the market, began a limited implementation of a related protocol called PubSubHubbub last month. Facebook-acquired FriendFeed worked with Google on that system. Now RSSCloud has a posse. Half a million blogs are created each month on WordPress and if Google Reader keeps taking its sweet time checking those blogs for updates instead of turning on support for RSSCloud, it’s going to look slow as molasses.Real time updates could enable several things. Faster distribution of blog posts, more compelling conversations in real-time and a renewed timeliness for blogging vs. services like Twitter are all likely consequences. The list of possible technical developments on top of RSSCloud could be as open-ended as the developments enabled by the core of RSS. RSS has made blogging viable by freeing readers of the requirement of visiting each site they are interested in. It has made podcasts subscribable. It has made wiki change notifications trackable outside the mess of the email inbox. It has made search a persistent action, instead of a one-off occasional delayed reaction. RSS is mixable, mashable, parsable, filterabile. Now RSSCloud could add a real-time dimension to all of that. The paradigm just got a very big vote of support. Company that runs BC casino says it follows rules on money laundering

first_imgRICHMOND, B.C. – The head of a company that runs a British Columbia casino alleged to have taken in millions that could be proceeds of crime says procedures to ensure compliance with regulations are strictly followed.Rod N. Baker says the Great Canadian Gaming Corp. has a “culture of integrity and transparency” and is committed to preventing illegal activities at all of its locations, including the River Rock Casino in Richmond.“We are proud of our track record, and the positive and open working relationship we have with our regulatory authorities and Crown partners,” he said in a statement released Monday.Last month, the B.C. government announced an independent expert’s review of the province’s policies in the gambling industry after concerns were raised about the possibility of money laundering at River Rock.Attorney General David Eby said he launched the probe after reading a report about the casino accepting $13.5 million in $20 bills in July 2015 that police said could be proceeds of crime involving Asian VIP clients.Baker said Great Canadian initially detected suspicious activity at the casino in 2012 and that its ongoing monitoring and reporting to the B.C. Lottery Corp. was crucial to identifying the individuals allegedly involved. The company provides records about unusual and large cash transactions directly to the lottery corporation, which assesses whether the transactions raise enough concern for further investigation, he added.“Contrary to suggestions in certain media reports, to our knowledge our company is not under investigation in any jurisdiction. Our employees followed all procedures required of them by BCLC and we do not believe our company’s actions would give cause to initiate any investigation,” he said.Baker said the company has contacted Peter German, who was appointed by Eby to conduct a review of the lottery corporation’s policies and practices to prevent money laundering.“Great Canadian is proud of its culture of integrity and positive interaction with our regulators and Crown partners, and will adopt any changes or improvements to the regulatory structure that result from the review.”Eby said he thought a July 2016 report commissioned by the province’s previous Liberal government should have been made public when it was completed. The report done by the accounting and consulting firm MNP compiled documents from B.C.’s Gaming Policy and Enforcement Branch. It says single cash buy-ins in excess of $500,000 with no known source of funds were accepted at River Rock.“Law enforcement intelligence has indicated that this currency may be the direct proceeds of crime,” the report says. The report makes more than a dozen recommendations, including implementing policies that casinos refuse unsourced cash deposits exceeding an established dollar amount, that anti-money laundering training programs are evaluated, and that casinos work to support cash-alternatives.A B.C. Lottery Corp. document in response said many recommendations in the report have been addressed though it was awaiting more direction from the Gaming Policy Enforcement Branch on dealing with and refusing large, unsourced cash deposits. The MNP report says its review wasn’t meant to provide an analysis about whether money laundering was actually occurring in B.C.’s casinos.last_img read more

Some DavidsTea shareholders express serious concerns over board nominees

first_imgMONTREAL – Some DavidsTea Inc. shareholders are pushing back against a turnaround plan and new board of directors proposed by a large shareholder group controlled by its co-founder, Herschel Segal.A joint letter to the tea chain’s board from Porchlight Equity Management LLC, TDM Asset Management PTY Ltd. and Edgepoint Wealth Management Inc. says they have “serious concerns” with Rainy Day Investments Ltd.’s proposal.RDI, which says it owns 46 per cent of the chain’s issued and outstanding shares, submitted a slate of director nominees for DavidsTea to consider, including Segal and Lorenzo Salvaggio, another former director. The shareholder group also says it no longer plans to propose an offer to buy out minority shareholders, but believes its proposed board can turn around the struggling retailer. The letter says Segal should not be allowed to reconstitute the board with handpicked nominees without consulting the board or other shareholders. It claims several of Segal’s nominees do not appear to have appropriate qualifications for the job and questions the independence of the proposed slate. The letter also highlights the scarcity of detail around RDI’s turnaround plan.“We are not prepared to simply accept RDI’s nominees and believe that there are a sufficient number of other shareholders that would hold similar views,” reads the letter dated March 28.The group calls on RDI to work with DavidsTea and other significant shareholders to agree on the board nominees, and asks the retailer to communicate their concerns to RDI and offer to start a collaborative process.“This approach will save (DavidsTea) and all other parties from unnecessary expense and disruption.”The company’s annual meeting of shareholders will take place on June 14.last_img read more

Conservatives pledge to expand tax credit for volunteer fire, search and rescue

first_imgUPPER KINGSCLEAR, N.B. — Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer is promising to expand a program giving volunteer search and rescue workers and firefighters tax credits for their supplies. He says if elected, he’d lower the number of service hours required to qualify for the program, introduced by a previous Conservative government.Right now, volunteers must work 200 hours a year to access the credit, and the Conservatives are pledging to lower that to 150. Scheer notes that volunteers often pay out-of-pocket for equipment, uniforms, transportation, training, and insurance — costs that run into the thousands of dollars. The promise will leave the amount those volunteers can claim unchanged, and the credit is non-refundable, so those who qualify can use it to reduce their overall tax payments, but don’t get any of that money back.Scheer made the announcement in the town of Upper Kingsclear, N.B., where the entire fire department is run by volunteers. The Canadian Presslast_img read more
